The claim arrives fully formed and oddly familiar
Strip the identifying details from a technology forecast about learning and it becomes almost impossible to place in time.
The rhetorical structure has three moves. First, a diagnosis: teaching as currently practised is inefficient, uneven and expensive, and the same explanation is delivered thousands of times by thousands of people of varying skill. Second, a capability: here is a medium that can capture the best version of that explanation and reproduce it without loss. Third, an inference: therefore the role of the teacher will change fundamentally, the lecture will end, and instruction will become both individual and affordable. Each move is reasonable on its own terms. The forecast fails at the joins, where the capability is assumed to translate directly into practice without passing through an institution, a timetable, a room and a person.
What is striking is how little the argument depends on the specific medium. Substitute a different technology into the same three moves and the passage still reads naturally. This should be a warning sign. An argument that survives the wholesale replacement of its central evidence is not really an argument about that evidence. It is a prior conviction about the nature of teaching, dressed in whatever capability happens to be new. That prior conviction is the delivery model of education, and it is the thing that ought to be examined, rather than the equipment.
Recognising the shape is not the same as refuting it. It is possible for a claim to have been wrong many times and to be right eventually, and someone will one day be right about something for reasons that were unavailable to earlier forecasters. The value of recognising the shape is that it changes the burden of proof. Instead of asking whether the new capability is impressive, which it usually is, you ask what makes this instance different from the many earlier instances that shared its structure. That is a harder question, and the answers to it are more informative than any demonstration.
